Text: Musical Acoustics, 3nd
Edition by Donald E. Hall
(Brooks/Cole: Pacific Grove CA, 2002) ISBN 0-534-37728-9
Course overview: This course is an introduction to the physics of sound as it relates to the production, propagation and perception of music. We will explore the properties of sound and the physical characteristics of various musical instruments to understand how they speak.
Calculator: A scientific calculator with square root, log, and yx is required. (A TI-35x or equivalent is sufficient.)
Expectations: I expect each of my students to attend class, having read the text reading assignment prior to coming to class and to engage actively in the experiences I have designed for his/her learning. After class, the notes for that and the previous lectures will be posted on the WebCT.
Homework: Reading assignments and homework assignments will be made. Homework will not be graded but feedback will be provided via the web. The purpose of homework is practice and preparation for the examinations.
Grading: There will be three (3) unit examinations each of which will count 20%. The final comprehensive examination will count 40%. No examinations will be dropped. Tenative test dates: Feb 7; Mar 12; Apr 14.
Final Examination: Please note that the final exam is at 10:30-12:30 a.m. Wednesday May 7 in Room 102. (This is one half [1/2] hour earlier than the regular class time.)
N.B. (Nota Bene): To receive laboratory science credit for this course you must enroll in Physics 1271, a one (1) semester credit hour laboratory course that correlates with this lecture. The lab is a separate course. Check the schedule at www.phys.unt.edu/PIC/1271.html.
